A regular feature on Jazz stages and music festivals throughout Canada and Europe, this summer Yvette Tollar will showcase her wide range of influences on Toronto stages. Recently, she followed up her critically-acclaimed debut release, Cactus Flowers, with the 2009 Juno-nominated record, Ima, which she co-produced along with her husband, bassist Rich Brown. Music audiences have only applauded her pacifying and unencumbered vocal charm as well as her delicate blend of poetry with Hungarian-inspired arrangements.

Alongside her quintet, Yvette Tollar will begin her live show circuit at 5pm on July 2nd at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. It is a free concert. Other appearances coming up include: Thursday, July 8th at The Boathouse in Kitchener; August 22nd at The Markham Jazz Festival, August 25th at Lula Lounge (with special guest Mary Margaret O’Hara) and September 14th at Hugh’s Room with special guest Sheila Jordan.

Hendrik Meurkens was born in Germany, studied in Rio and is currently based in New York. Meurkens is one of the world’s greatest living harmonica and vibraphone players; specializing in Latin jazz but also fully versed in jazz standards and is an extraordinary composer. His annual show at The Rex Hotel is always a big event so be sure to get their early to check out one of the most accomplished chromatic harp players on the planet!

The Beaches Jazz Festival is celebrating their 22nd year of bringing free music to the masses. The festival includes three days (July 16-18) at Woodbine Park, three days of various bands along Queen East for the Streetfest, and two days (July 24-25) of big name acts performing free at Kew Gardens. Some of the acts featured this year include Five After Four, Sophie Berkal-Sarbit and Canfire.

There are also workshops offered, including Vocal Jazz Bootcamp (with Heather Bambrick) The Business of Jazz (Jaymz Bee), Jazz Drumming (Norman Marshall Villenueve), Jazz Photography (Bill and Kris King) and more. The workshops are July 19-21.

This year features performance art and musical acts that include Brian Ruryk, Lary 7, Myths, DD/MM/YYYY and Friendly Rich & The Lollipop People.
